Utah’s Legislative Stupidity….ad nauseum

The Salt Lake Tribune yesterday reported that the Utah State Senate passed SB250, asking the party caucuses in the state legislature to create a ratings system for Senate candidates and to evaluate the performance of U.S. senators. The bill’s sponsor, Howard Stephenson (R-Draper), stated: ”I believe this would enhance the attention our U.S. senators give to the state and to the state legislature.”
The 17th Amendment, which Stephenson considers a mistake, gave the people of the states the right to elect senators, taking that authority away from the state governments. Apparently Stephenson, and the rest of his cronies in the Utah Senate, believe that Utah’s people aren’t qualified to elect their own representatives, we need the legislature to do that for us.
Brandon Loomis of the Salt Lake Tribune reported this measure as part of the Senate’s “sessionlong pursuit of states’ rights.” Really? What this measure does is attempt to further entrench the power of Utah’s legislature and its controlling party. This is another shining example of how our elected officials really think. They want to rail against the evils of government while attempting to take more and more rights away from the people. While I often question the collective wisdom of Utah’s electorate, the last thing I want to see is the wishes of the voters overridden by patriarchs in the legislature.
Utah voters take note. Your legislators don’t think that you are capable of determining who should represent you in the United States Senate. Here is the list of Senators that voted in favor of this insane bill:
- Adams
- Bramble
- Buttars
- Davis
- Dayton
- Greiner
- Hinkins
- Jenkins
- Knudson
- Liljenquist
- Madsen
- Mayne
- Niederhauser, Wayne
- Okerlund
- Stephenson
- Stevenson
- Stowell
- Valentine
- Van Tassell
- Waddoups
Folks, if you live in the districts “represented” by any of these people, I strongly suggest you go shopping for a new candidate. These people not only don’t represent you, they are also openly stating that you don’t have the mental capacity to elect your own government officials. This is not an effort to curb the rising power of the federal government, it’s a ridiculous ploy to entrench the power of the state government and the controlling party at the expense of Utah’s people.
