The Corporation of Utah, continued….

Well, our dear friends in the State Legislature are at it again, working hard to ensure that corporate interests prevail over the needs and wants of We The People. In their latest bit of chicanery, our elected employees have decided to pass a resolution opposing the creation of any National Monuments or parks in Utah. Here’s their argument: the federal government has no right to set aside land for future generations to enjoy, that responsibility should reside with the state government. Here’s the problem: Utah’s state government has repeatedly abdicated this responsibility in favor of corporate greed.
If you’re a corporation that wants to destroy Utah’s environmental heritage, all that you need to do is write big enough checks to our elected officials. EnergySolutions will attest to that, as will the mining companies that have pillaged not only the environment of Carbon and Emery counties, but also the people who have worked in their unsafe hellholes. Throw a bit of oil into the mix, and let’s start drilling on or near some of the most spectacular natural landscapes on the planet. Hell, we’ve all seen them and there are plenty of pictures of them around, so there’s really no need to protect them anymore, right? That’s what Utah’s legislature is telling us, the federal government, and more importantly, the corporations. Come to Utah, write us a check, and have your way with the environment.
Toss in the next little bit of fun. The Wasatch Front is now on the EPA’s list of one of the worst polluted areas in America for air quality. What is the legislature’s response: pass a bill to reduce the fines on emissions-inspection stations that pass cars that should fail. That’s right, the first time a tech “slides one through” they should get sent to a training course. The second time, they should be fined $500, and after the third time they can lose their certification for 2 years. If the Health Department can prove that the shop owner “knowingly participated” in the bogus test, they can be fined up to $10,000. According to Senator Mark Madsen (R-Eagle Mountain), this places accountability where it should be – firmly away from anything corporate.
Of course, this bill was opposed by our friend Buttars (R-West Jordan) who felt that allowing up to a $10,00o fine was “too extreme.” Buttars, who claims to have relatives in the industry, said they’ve never been fined that much. Hmmmm, makes me wonder just how many times they’ve violated the law and passed a vehicle that was blowing too many pollutants. Perhaps if technicians and shops were hit with steep fines for passing polluting vehicles the air in this valley would be breathable. But hey, air pollution is probably just one of those things like global warming that was made up by liberals as a political agenda, right?
Folks, it’s time we all took a good, hard look at the idiots we have elected to represent us. Do you really think that the actions of the state legislature represent the best interests of the people of Utah? Stop playing the game by their rules and elect some new blood. I don’t care if you’re a Republican, a Democrat, or anything else – all of these idiots need to go. It is long past time we flushed the system and started with some fresh blood.
